Waste Management

Know the Rules, Act Responsibly

🌿 Our Goal: A Waste-Free Kerala

Waste management is essential for protecting the environment, safeguarding public health and ensuring a sustainable future. Every household, institution, commercial establishment and individual must actively participate in maintaining cleanliness. By segregating waste at source and ensuring proper collection and scientific treatment, we can collectively build a clean, healthy and sustainable community.

🌍 Importance of Waste Management

Improper disposal of waste pollutes soil, water and air, spreads diseases and damages the environment. Scientific waste management helps conserve natural resources and improve the quality of life.

🌳

Environmental Protection

Prevents pollution of soil, rivers, backwaters, canals and other water bodies while protecting biodiversity and natural resources.

🏥

Public Health

Reduces the spread of diseases, foul odours, mosquito and fly breeding, and other health hazards by maintaining hygienic surroundings.

♻️

Resource Conservation

Promotes reuse and recycling, reduces the consumption of raw materials and helps conserve valuable natural resources.

💧

Protection of Water Resources

Prevents waste from entering drains, canals, ponds, rivers, backwaters and other water bodies.

🌱

Sustainable Development

Encourages responsible consumption and helps preserve a clean environment for future generations.

🤝

Social Responsibility

Encourages collective action by citizens, local self-government institutions, organisations and service providers.

👥 Responsibilities of Every Citizen

Waste management is not the responsibility of local self-government institutions alone. Every individual and institution that generates waste has an important role to play.

🏠

Households

Treat biodegradable waste at source using suitable methods such as composting. Segregate non-biodegradable waste and hand it over to Haritha Karma Sena.

🏪

Commercial Establishments

Keep business premises clean, avoid dumping waste in public places and follow the prescribed waste collection and treatment systems.

🏢

Institutions and Bulk Waste Generators

Manage waste at source in accordance with applicable rules and regulations and maintain necessary records wherever required.

🚯

Public Places

Do not dump or burn waste along roadsides, in water bodies or in other public places.

🚛

Waste Collection System

Follow the collection schedule of Haritha Karma Sena and hand over segregated waste in the prescribed manner.

📣

Public Participation

Report illegal dumping to the concerned authorities and actively participate in cleanliness initiatives.

♻️ Different Types of Waste and Their Segregation

Segregation of waste at source is the most important first step in waste management. Each category of waste requires an appropriate collection and treatment method.

🍌

1. Wet / Biodegradable Waste

Food leftovers, vegetable and fruit peels, flowers and other organic materials. These can be treated through suitable methods such as composting and biogas production.

🧴

2. Dry / Non-Biodegradable Waste

Plastic, paper, metal, glass and similar materials. Keep them clean and dry and hand them over to authorised collection systems for reuse and recycling.

🩹

3. Sanitary Waste

Diapers, sanitary napkins and similar waste. Wrap and store them safely and hand them over through the prescribed collection and treatment system.

⚠️

4. Special-Care Waste

Batteries, bulbs, expired medicines, chemicals and similar materials. These must be handled separately through appropriate collection systems.

⚠️ Important: Hazardous waste and waste requiring special handling must not be mixed with ordinary household waste. Follow the instructions of authorised collection agencies.

🌱 The 5R Principle of Waste Management

The 5R principle encourages responsible consumption and helps reduce the amount of waste generated.

🚫

Refuse

Avoid unnecessary products and single-use materials.

📉

Reduce

Buy only what is needed and reduce unnecessary consumption.

🔄

Reuse

Reuse bags, containers, bottles and other usable items.

🛠️

Repair

Repair usable items instead of discarding them.

♻️

Recycle

Send segregated recyclable materials through authorised recycling systems.

🏡 Waste Management at Households

Every family can make a significant contribution to cleanliness by adopting simple and practical waste management practices.

🪣

Segregate Waste Daily

Use separate containers for different categories of waste. Do not mix biodegradable, recyclable and special-care waste.

🌿

Compost Biodegradable Waste

Use suitable household systems, including compost bins, to treat kitchen and other biodegradable waste.

🧺

Store Dry Waste Properly

Keep recyclable materials clean and dry and hand them over during the scheduled collection.

🚰

Keep Drains and Canals Clean

Do not dispose of food waste, plastic or other materials into household drains and public drainage systems.

🛍️

Avoid Single-Use Plastics

Use cloth bags, reusable bottles and containers instead of single-use plastic products.

📅

Follow Collection Schedules

Hand over segregated waste according to the schedule and instructions of the local waste collection system.

🌱 Simple Methods for Managing Kitchen Waste

  • Collect vegetable peels, fruit peels and other organic leftovers separately.
  • Use a suitable composting system for biodegradable waste.
  • Maintain proper moisture and ventilation in the composting system.
  • Follow the operating instructions of the selected composting method.
  • Use mature compost in gardens and for plants wherever appropriate.
