PALLURUTHY BLOCK PANCHAYATH
Topography and environmental features
Palluruthy Block Panchayat is located in the southwest of Ernakulam district, adjacent to Kochi, the queen of the Arabian Sea. This block includes the village panchayats of Chellanam, Kumbalangi and Kumbalam. The block area, which has a coastline of 15.5 km, is rich in backwaters, streams and canals.
It is bordered by the Kochi Corporation in the north, the Cheppanam Lake in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Kumbalangi Ezhupunna Lake and the Pattanakkad block area in the south.
The Pokkali farmlands, spread over more than 1600 hectares and spread across three panchayats, are rich land for organic farming. The entire western coastline is made up of water-logged loamy soil. These are marine deposits.
Paddy and coconut are the main crops in this region, which is abundant with paddy fields and water bodies. Abundant aquaculture in the water bodies – mainly shrimp farming is a specialty of the region. There are also many Chinese nets in this area.
Abundant with backwaters, Kumbalangi has been positioned internationally as a model tourism village. Due to Kumbalangi's topography and other environmental considerations, this panchayat has been included in the Responsible Tourism programme.
The NH47 bypass passes through Kumbalam gram panchayat, which includes the islands of Chathamma – Cheppanam, Panangad and Kumbalam. The Ernakulam – Alappuzha railway line also passes through Kumbalam gram panchayat.
Although the three gram panchayats have different terrains, they are rich in backwaters. This area, which has a large number of fishermen, used to have a lot of fish in the past. However, the toxic substances and other wastes discharged from the industries operating in the nearby areas are making our water bodies inactive and due to this, the water resources including fish and shellfish are being destroyed.
Although it is an area with many water bodies, the availability of drinking water is low. The biggest challenge in this area.
Social – economic – cultural situation
In ancient times, this area was under the kingdom of Perumpadappu Thiruswarupam. Since ancient times, foreign traders from China, Egypt, Rome, and Persia had come here in boats and ships. This was a fertile land, and the main resources of that time, such as paddy, coconut, coconut oil, coir, dried fish, and salt, were readily available here. In exchange for these, the traders who came from the hills and came by mountain roads, the mountains were bought in exchange for them, and gold bars were bought from the foreigners. The people lived in houses made of logs. In addition, it was an area with lush fields, thickets rich in kummatti, kandal, kaitha, munjha, and illimula, swamps, and streams. A small ravine was formed here during a major flood in the 14th century and gradually became Kochi.
Brahmins, Nayans, Ezhavas, Scheduled Castes - Scheduled Tribes, Christians, Muslims and other people of different religions lived and worked there. Sree Narayana Gurudev visited the Kumbalangi areas and his visit led to the revival of the country. Later, most of the Brahmins and Nayans moved to nearby developed areas.
